Now That She's Lived
by Millie Jarrett and Contemporary Collective

Exhibit Open may 9th - june 10th, 2025

Artist Reception: February 28th at 6:00pm (In the Art Gallery)

Now That She’s Lived is a celebration of the life and career of a woman who made a significant contribution to abstract art both as an artist and a teacher. Viewing Jarrett’s works alongside those of her students gives the viewer a more comprehensive picture of Jarrett’s artistic journey. In Jarrett’s own words, “You want to see a life, look at your work.”

For more than 70 years, Millie Jarrett has been creating beautiful works of abstract art. She began painting as a teen, and in her early work, she tells of receiving this critique from her teacher, Gus Baker: “Sugar, to create art, you just haven’t lived long enough.”

Not to be deterred, Jarrett continued painting. She started out with classes at the Nashville Museum of Art and sold encyclopedias door-to-door to pay for her art supplies. She later received an AFA from Watkins College of Art and Design and found herself to be an excellent salesperson and career woman. She continued to build her career in sales and management alongside her career as an artist.

In 2012, Contemporary Collective began displaying their works together, and represent a variety of ages, approaches, and motivations for their work. Each of the artists represented in this exhibit were students of Millie Jarrett and have chosen these pieces as a testament to her legacy.

What makes our gallery special

The Art Gallery is the most versatile space at the Center for the Arts, serving as a reception hall, practice space for our theatrical productions, and housing a concession stand and full-service bar. Most importantly, it holds a rotating selection of curated art from local artists. For inquiries related to the art gallery, please contact us at (615) 904-2787 or info@boroarts.org.
